Birth Asphyxia & Hypoxia Injuries

Securing Justice for Injured Babies in Louisville, KY

During childbirth, it is crucial that a child’s brain gets sufficient oxygen. If a problem leads to asphyxia or hypoxia— terms that essentially mean that the oxygen supply or blood flow are cut off — the result for the child is brain damage. The child may suffer from cerebral palsy, developmental delays, or cognitive impairment. He or she will likely require lifelong care.

Our Louisville birth injury attorneys stand up for the rights of children and families across Kentucky in cases involving asphyxia and hypoxia. Paul A. Casi, II, has more than 29 years of experience working with children injured due to negligence before, during, and after birth. We know how to hold the negligent parties responsible and get children the lifelong care that they need.

How Do Asphyxia & Hypoxia Happen?

A variety of problems can lead to a baby’s oxygen supply being cut off. During pregnancy, and during labor and delivery, the baby receives oxygen from the utero-placental unit. Any compromise to this unit can cause the baby to suffer asphyxia or hypoxia-ischemia.

Examples of potential causes of asphyxia and hypoxia may include:

  • Ruptured uterus
  • Placental abruption
  • Compressed umbilical cord

When carelessness, wrongdoing, or otherwise substandard care by a nurse, OB/GYN, or other medical professional causes a child to suffer a lack of oxygen during birth, this may provide grounds for a lawsuit. We can review your case to determine what occurred and how to hold the at-fault doctor, nurse, hospital, or medical facility accountable.
