When a mother dies during childbirth, it is usually caused by one of three conditions:
- Infection: If undetected, infections can cause organs to shut down.
- Bleeding: If bleeding is not stopped, the loss of blood can be fatal.
- High blood pressure disorders such as pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH), preeclampsia, or toxemia: These disorders can cause placental abruptions and damage to vital organs, including the mother’s brain, kidneys, or liver.
A maternal death can occur when a doctor fails to properly diagnose and treat these conditions. Doctors and nurses are trained to recognize conditions that could lead to problems during childbirth. They have the knowledge, and they have the tools to prevent maternal death. The question is, did they use them correctly?

“Never Events”
Maternal deaths or serious disabilities associated with labor or delivery in a low-risk pregnancy while in a hospital have been classified as “never events” by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the National Quality Forum. A “never event” is a serious and costly error in the provision of health services that should never happen.
The CDC issued a report in 2019 which found that 700 women die every year in the United States from complications of pregnancy. The report also found that 60% of these deaths are preventable. It found that the old triad of high blood pressure, infection, and bleeding are the most common cause of deaths immediately after delivery and that bleeding remains a major cause of death during delivery. Compensation for Maternal Wrongful Death
When a mother tragically dies during childbirth or shortly thereafter, there is a significant impact on her children. Research shows that children who lose a parent at an early age may experience fears of abandonment, fears of death of those they love and of themselves, difficulties in school, and learning problems. They are also at increased risk of developing emotional problems, including anxiety, depression, withdrawal, sleep disturbances, and aggression.
We have experience in helping families deal with this loss and in obtaining full compensation for the loss of the mother’s love, affection, companionship, guidance, aid, and service. We are dedicated to getting you the support that you and your family need and deserve.
